Recovering from Liposuction

San Diego residents can get back to work in a week.

Liposuction Recovery!

Liposuction recovery is generally very mild. When compared to other plastic surgery procedures, the recovery from liposuction is not bad. There is typically some bruising, swelling, redness, and of course the area treated will be sore for a few weeks, but you should be able to resume normal activities within just a few days. It is probably best to hold off on intense exercise for up to four weeks if you had a large area treated.

Liposuction recovery tends to take place in phases. Here is what your recovery may look like:

Weeks 1-2: You will definitely be sore in the area treated during the first two weeks after your procedure. It should not be unbearable, but your movement of that region will be hindered and it will be sensitive to the touch. You should try to move around a bit, only to promote blood flow and avoid blood clotting (which is rare). Once you wake up from the procedure you will be wearing a compression garment to help with reduce the swelling. The bandages will need to stay on for a few days due to leakage of the treated area. You will also experience bruising, numbness, and swelling of the treated region. You will be able to resume work within the first two weeks. Mild exercise is allowed during this time, but ONLY mild, no intense exercises.

Weeks 3-4: Numbness should subside and you should start getting your sensitivity back to the region around week 3 and 4. They will still be swollen though. At this time your body will go through changes as your new body starts to take shape. As week 4+ arrives your recovery period will be coming to an end. The swelling, as well as the numbness will subside, but the slight bruising you see will remain for up to 2-3 months. You will start seeing the best results around the 6th month mark. Your skin will start to look tight and healthy again, the bruising and swelling should go away, and the scarring will be reduced.

Tips that will help with liposuction recovery:

  • Drink lots of water and stay hydrated at all times.
  • Do NOT apply a heating pad or ice packages over your incisions
  • Continue to wear your garment until the doctor instructs you to
  • Takes all the medications prescribed to you by your doctor until he says differently
  • Do NOT take a long bath, go swimming, or sit in a jacuzzi for at least a week after your procedure. This will increase the chance of infection. Quick showers are OK.

Let your Doctor know if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Extreme Pain
  • Discharge from the incision such as puss
  • Strange or unlikely odor coming from the incisions
  • Strange growths around the incision area, such as blisters or holes
