Frequent Questions About Liposuction

A Service of San Diego Plastic Surgeon Tom Pousti, M.D.

Frequently Asked Questions!

Q. Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

A.The best candidates for liposuction are in good health, a patient who has realistic expectations of what can be accomplished. Dr. Pousti can provide a good candidate with significant improvement, but not likely to achieve perfection. Dr. Pousti gives his best to achieve what the patient is looking for. There is no age or weight limit for liposuction patients. Most patients are of average age are concerned about localized accumulations of fat areas. Believe it or not, the happiest of patients are patients that are slightly obese. The more localized fat areas you have, the more fat can be removed.

Q. What kind of liposuction does Dr. Pousti perform?

A. Dr. Pousti performs Tumescent Liposuction, which involves the injection of about three times more fluid that the amount of fat removed. The reason that is performed is to cause the area to swell separating the fat cells from the skin. The removal of the fat cells using the cannula ( a metal tube for insertion into the body to draw off fluid)  is then much easier to remove. This also helps limit the damage caused by surgery. Dr. Pousti doesn’t use local anesthesia for the liposuction procedure, he uses general anesthesia. The procedure can take anywhere form 1-3 hours depending on the severity of the case.

Q. How long do I need to take off from work?

A. Dr. Pousti suggests that you take off of from work at least 3-5 days after your surgery. You should continue to take it easy once you return back to work and avoid as much strenuous activities as possible for the first month of surgery.

Q. Can liposuction be used as a weight loss method?

A.  Liposuction and weight loss are closely associated with one another. Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure. Liposuction is used for sculpting the body (upper thighs, buttock region, abdomen, hips, arms, back, knees, etc), however liposuction is not considered as a treatment for losing weight. This is a type of cosmetic surgery that works against concentrated deposits of fat in specific areas that are not responsive to other fat removal methods.

Q. Will my skin re-bound after the liposuction?

A. When you meet Dr. Pousti for your consultation he will discuss the possible complications are risks of the liposuction procedure. During the consultation Dr. Pousti will assess your skin elasticity and discuss your results. The older we get, the less elastic our skin become. For instance if there is a patient who is interested in liposuction of the abdomen and the patient doesn’t get the results she was looking for. It is more or less likely that the Doctor will recommend the patient get a tummy tuck to get rid of the excess skin around the abdomen area.

Q.Will the fatty tissue “come back”?

A. Fat does not usually come back in treated areas provided that the patient does not gain a significant amount of weight after their surgery. If the patient gains a significant amount of weight, then fat can return to an area previously treated by liposuction. With increasing weight the degree of fat accumulation in a previously treated liposuction patient is proportionately less than in untreated areas. After liposuction, relatively less fat accumulates in treated areas compared to untreated areas.

Q. Where does the fat go when a person gains weight after liposuction?

A. If a patient gains a significant amount of weight (more than 10 pounds) after liposuction, then the fat must go somewhere on the body. In fact, the fat accumulates in all areas of the body in proportion to the amount of fat cells in each area. Areas where fat cells have been removed by liposuction will accumulate relatively little fat, while in areas not treated by liposuction relatively more fat will be deposited. For example, if a woman gains weight after liposuction of her hips, outer thighs, and abdomen, then proportionally more of the fat will be deposited elsewhere such as the woman’s breasts, face, back and legs.

Q. If I do not gain weight, does fat come back in treated areas?

A. If a patient does not gain weight after liposuction, then fat does not come back in the treated areas. Liposuction does not stop the aging process. It is natural for the size and location of the body’s fat deposits to change gradually with increasing age. Despite expected changed with aging, the results of a successful liposuction treatment should always be apparent.

Q. What can I expect if I get pregnant after liposuction?

A. Pregnancy does not permanently alter the results of liposuction. If a woman has liposuction and then becomes pregnant, gains weight, gives birth and finally loses the excess weight of her pregnancy, then her original liposuction improvements will therefore return, just as if she had never been pregnant.

Q. How much fat can be removed? How many pounds?

A. The maximum amount of fat that can safely be removed is 6 to 8 pounds which is 3 to 4 liters. The greater the volume of fat removed in a single day the greater the risk of complications. Dr. Pousti will divide liposuction procedures into separate surgical procedures separated by 3 to 4 weeks for patients who require more than 6 to 8 pounds of fat removal.

Q. How long will it be until I see results?

A. Most patients will see about 90%of their liposuction results within one to three months after their surgery. The first few weeks you will expect to see postoperative swelling. As long as you take it easy and don’t do strenuous activities your results may be quicker. To see the full effect of the procedure it takes about 6 months.

Q. How long do I need to take off from work?

A. Dr. Pousti suggests that you take off of from work at least 3-5 days after your surgery. You should continue to take it easy once you return back to work and avoid as much strenuous activities as possible for the first month of surgery

Q. Will liposuction help cellulite or saggy skin?

A. Liposuction does not improve cellulite or sagging skin. Liposuction contours your body, but does not improve the quality of skin texture.

Q. Will liposuction improve the fat stomach I acquired after my last baby?

A. Liposuction provides excellent improvement to the abdomen after pregnancy. So yes in fact, the vast majority of patients who receive liposuction are provided a better and natural appearance. One better than if they had received a tummy tuck. This is only true for some cases. If there is too much amount of excess skin then the patient should think of a tummy tuck procedure.
