Cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the CoolSculpting technology works by gently cooling unwanted fat cells in the body, inducing a natural and controlled elimination of fat cells. CoolSculpting is based on scientific discovery from the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. The research proved through vast research that fat cells are more susceptible to cold and are selectively, painlessly, and permanently destroyed.

Several weeks after the procedure, cooled fat cells begin a process called apoptosis and start to shrink and disappear. The patient begins to naturally and gradually eliminate cooled fat cells, thereby reducing the thickness of the fat layer in targeted areas of the body.

Unlike other harsh fat reduction or removal procedures, CoolSculpting requires no needles, surgery, or recovery periods. During the procedure, a non-invasive applicator delivers precisely controlled cooling to the treatment area. Treatments last between one and two hours, and patients have the option for additional treatments for more substantial effects if desired. Each CoolSculpting procedure results in an undeniable reduction of fat in the treatment area, and patients see results as early as three weeks following treatment. I came to see Dr. Pousti after considerable research on the web and lots of examination of before and after photos.  I knew I did not want a tummy tuck, but I wasn’t sure what liposuction would do.  I met with him and he tried to talk me out of it.  The fair question was “Do you want to look better in clothes or do you want to look better without clothes?”  It’s not an either/or question, I really wanted to look better with and without.  But I certainly understood that I probably wouldn’t be wearing a bikini, even after the surgery and swelling were gone.

We decided to go ahead with the surgery.  Everyone on the staff was reassuring and wonderful.  The surgery was???  I don’t remember.  I’m certainly glad I had someone drive me home.  The pain pills were great and I really didn’t have too much pain — I wasn’t dizzy or very uncomfortable; I was fine going up and down stairs.  I took a week off from work but I think I could have gone back in 3 days.  I would emphasize that, though the garment is a pain, it is necessary, 24/7.  I used the pain pills as necessary, tapering off for the first week.  Then I was fine with occasional ibuprofen.

I was surprised at the swelling and how long it has lasted.  I’m now 6 weeks out and there is still swelling, characterized by “hard” areas in my belly.  Occasional sore areas and stiffness, BUT, the muffin top is gone, especially above my butt.  My lower belly is flat, and my upper abdomen is less than it was, but still a bit swollen, and Dr. Pousti says it will continue to decrease.  I’m satisfied with the results and glad that I did the surgery.  I’d do it again.  I wore a bathing suit last weekend in the desert, with no hesitation, and got compliments from friends who had no clue about the surgery.
